Connecting Through the United States
If your itinerary includes any stop or airport connection in the United States, you must comply with U.S. immigration requirements, even if:
- Your layover is only a few hours.
- You do not leave the airport.
- You are travelling onwards to another country.
Unlike many countries, the United States generally requires passengers to pass through immigration before continuing their journey.
Do I Need an ESTA?
Travellers who hold passports from countries participating in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) must obtain an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before travelling through the United States, including for transit.
If You Are Not Eligible for ESTA
If your nationality is not eligible for ESTA, you will normally require a valid U.S. Transit (C) Visa or another valid U.S. visa before travelling through the United States, even if your stay is only a few hours while waiting for your next flight.
Fiji Passport Holders
Travellers holding a Fijian passport are not eligible for ESTA.
If your journey includes a stop in the United States, even for a short airport connection, you will generally require a valid U.S. Transit (C) Visa or another valid U.S. visa before boarding your flight.

London → Los Angeles → Nadi (Fiji)
Even if your connection in Los Angeles is only 2–4 hours and you never leave the airport, you will normally require a valid U.S. transit visa before travelling.
Jamaican Passport Holders
Travellers holding a Jamaican passport are not eligible for ESTA.
If your flight connects through any U.S. airport, you will generally require a valid U.S. Transit (C) Visa or another valid U.S. visa before travelling.
Example
London → New York → Montego Bay
Even if your layover in New York is only three hours, a valid U.S. transit visa is generally required before boarding.
